Portraits of my partner in Portland, Oregon

Everything New Is Old Again

July 7, 2021

In early June I did a black and white film portrait shoot with my partner. Me being me, I thought it would be fun to challenge myself by imposing some major limitations on this shoot. First of all, it could only be a maximum of one hour long. Secondly, I only took one roll of film with me for a maximum of 36 photos. If you only shoot digital, you’d think that would only be enough frames for two minutes, but I’ve found this is actually a pretty reasonable pace for 35mm film during a portrait shoot.

Yeah, But My Film Goes Down To 13

Usually when I shoot black and white, I prefer a gritty look. However, it’s always fun to try something new. The film from this shoot is a roll of Lomography Babylon Kino 13, which is an ISO 13 film. That means you need a TON of light to make this film work. Luckily, we timed this shoot to be on a beautiful sunny day.

Here are some of my favorite photos:

I love the glowing leaves in some of these!

Although I did go retro, I still brought my off-camera lighting kit. Can you guess which two photos are lit with flash? Hopefully it’s not completely obvious.
